B52- a work of art

My name is Daniel Farmer, 43 years young, a qualified master 5, a yacht master ocean and owner of ‘B52’. I started sailing at the age of 14 in the navy cadets where I developed a healthy appetite for the sport. Wanting to stay close to the water I joined the Royal Australian Navy in 1989 as a diesel mechanic which has proven a handy skill to have as a boat owner. After deciding that Navy life wasn't for me I completed a sign writing apprenticeship discovering I had a creative side and have grown a successful business named ‘Brushfire’ designing and painting signs and custom airbrush art.

When I was 19 my father and I owned a 19 foot bilge keel yacht and in 2006 I purchased my own yacht "Inisheer" a Duncanson 35-a real ocean boat with a bright yellow hull. I loved that boat and after moving it up to Mooloolaba in 2008 I joined the SCYC (Sunshine Coast Yacht Club) and began blue water racing. I became addicted to yacht racing and learnt a lot about racing with the help of SCYC members like Richard Marchant(Outlaw), Dave Young(Outlaw), David "Gutz" Fairfax(Tickle my Fancy), Lindsay Waddell ( Blue Eagle) and others. We took out the MYC (Mooloolaba Yacht Club) Blue water series div.2 in 2009. Also in that year I was awarded the SCYC Skipper of the year after missing only 5 weekends sailing out of the entire year.

I sold the Dunco in 2013 and purchased ‘B52’ with Kym Lincolne in 2014. ‘B52’ is a Grand Prix Sydney 41 commercial yacht which was crowned the 2012 Pittwater to Coffs winner in PHF prior to us owning her. She continues her pedigree today since we have taken ownership with a custom airbrushed bomber themed paint job which includes a bow logo, bullet holes and lots of pop rivets (painted by myself). We compete in most Qld yachting events including the ABRW & HIRW and have enjoyed podium results on B52 in the following;

2016 QCYC Surf to City 3rd IRC

2016 QCYC Brisbane to Gladstone 2nd IRC teams

2016 RQYS Commodore's Cup 1st IRC

2016 RQYS Brisbane to Keppel 1st IRC Div 3, 2nd PHF shorthanded division

2016 QCYC Bribie Cup winner.

Being a member of SCYC in the early years we never ran a SCOR (Sunshine Coast Ocean Regatta) event so I am super excited to be entering ‘B52’ in this year’s race on the waters off the Sunshine Coast, my old stomping grounds- true ocean racing.

I have experienced so many fantastic memories and adventures sailing it's hard to say which has stood out the most for me, however I’d have to say it's being in nature and the elements that I love. The wildlife I have seen up close is awesome! Sailing is a skill of harnessing the power of the ever changing elements for the best result for your boat- I love this challenge.

The best lesson I have learnt in sailing is that what follows every storm is a period of settled weather and the most beautiful time ahead. Not just the physical storms-the mental, the emotional, real life illnesses. Yes even death itself. A new day begins every morning, a course is set and everyone can make new decisions and that is - to sail through whatever comes your way in life. Because there is one thing that we know and that is...we only have one life and our job is to LIVE IT. If you do that I promise you will feel complete and utter freedom!

When you sail your yacht across your life's ocean all you have to do is remember to set your sails, adjust your course and sail through whatever weather comes your way-we can all become sailors.
